AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest behind an outstanding all-around performance from
Gyöngyvér Araczki.
The Pacers are now 13-5 on the season.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by Araczki's 12 kills with a .588 attack percentage. She also posted six digs, five blocks and an ace.
Sadie McKay notched a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs to go along with a block while
Emily Lammers had a solid effort with 12 kills, eight digs, an ace and a block.
Lexi Rogers narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and nine digs while
Alisha Pitt added seven kills, a block and a pair of digs.
Mallory Barash garnered a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs. She also chipped in two blocks.
Kari Mercer anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs. She added three assists.
In the opening frame, McKay gave the home team an early 8-7 lead. Lammers followed it up with an ace before Araczki sliced the court with an ace. Leading 16-14, Araczki and Rogers teamed up for a block. Araczki notched a kill, forcing a time-out. After the break, McKay slammed home a kill for a five-point edge.
Up by five, 23-18, Lammers took a pass from Barash and found the court with her attempt. Two plays later, Rogers ended the set with a kill, giving the team a 25-19 victory.
In the extremely close second frame, Araczki's kill made it 13-11. An error by C-N and a block from Araczki and Barash pushed the score to 15-11 for the home team. Up 19-16, Pitt took a pass from Barash and beat the block for a point. Leading 23-20, an error by the visitors and a kill from Araczki extended the margin to three, 24-21. Two plays later, McKay took a shot down the line for the 25-23 victory.
USC Aiken jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the final stanza and never looked back. Pitt started the set off with a block. Two plays later, McKay slammed home a kill. Up 4-3, Lammers and Araczki each had kills. Another kill by Lammers pushed the margin to 10-3.
Up 10-4, Cox's team embarked on a 6-0 spurt. During the run, Rogers had two kills as did Araczki. Barash found the court for a point as well. Cruising toward the 25-point mark, Pitt had three of the final four kills for USC Aiken before Rogers finished it off with another kill in the 14-point win.
For the match, USC Aiken hit .294 while limiting the opposition to a .129 attack percentage.
