MORROW, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken dropped a back-and-forth 64-63 overtime contest at Clayton State Wednesday evening in a PBC contest.
The Pacers are now 10-7 overall, including 4-3 in league action.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Jentri Worley's 15-point, six-rebound, four-assist and three-steal performance.
Kelsie Woodard was a perfect six-for-six from the field en route to a 14-point effort. She also snagged four rebounds.
Emily Trushel added 11 points, three boards and a block.
Delaney Trushel tallied nine points and three assists while
Annalise Malone notched six points and six rebounds.
Hailey Unger and
Breanna Gustave each garnered five six boards in the game.
Tied at 6-6 in the early going, Worley found
Marta Rivera for an inside bucket at the 3:54 mark. Unger hit Rivera moments later for a lay-up, giving the visitors at 10-6 edge. With the score knotted at 12-12,
Emily Trushel buried a shot in the lane for a two-point margin.
A three-point play at the 8:02 mark of the second quarter propelled the Pacers to a 17-12 lead. Trailing 23-20, Woodard canned both charity tosses with 3:43 to play before halftime. A jumper by
Delaney Trushel gave Miller's team a 24-23 working margin. With 2:05 to go before intermission, Woodard found
Delaney Trushel for a shot from distance, giving the visitors a four-point lead. USC Aiken maintained a 29-25 advantage at the break.
The Lakers outscored USC Aiken 19-8 in the third period to take a 44-37 lead going into the fourth frame.
Miller's team responded by racing to the lead with a 9-2 run to start the fourth. During the spurt, Woodard hit a jumper off a pass from Worley.
Emily Trushel nailed a jumper before Woodard nailed a lay-up. Down by three, 46-43,
Delaney Trushel connected on a shot before Woodard went inside for another lay-up, giving the team a 47-46 lead.
Trailing 51-47,
Annalise Malone found the bottom of the net off a pass from
Emily Trushel with 3:30 to go. After continuing to play stellar defense,
Delaney Trushel hit Woodard for a lay-up, knotting the score at 51-51 with 40 seconds to play.
Down by two, 53-51, USC Aiken called a time-out. After the break, Worley's sensational pass set up Woodard for a lay-up, tying the game with seven seconds remaining in regulation. A last-second miss by the Lakers sent the game into overtime.
The back-and-forth contest saw
Emily Trushel convert an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:47 to play for a 58-56 lead. With 1:53 to go, Worley found the bottom of the net on a pair of free throws for a 61-60 advantage. USC Aiken held a 63-62 margin but the Lakers managed to hit a jumper with four seconds to play for the game-winner.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 27-of-63 from the floor (42. 9 percent). The squad made eight-of-13 from the charity stripe (61.5 percent). Miller's squad pulled down 40 rebounds. The Pacers dished out 14 assists and garnered 20 points off the bench.
