AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team lost a 62-58 game to Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 11-5 overall, including 4-2 against league teams.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Jalen McCoy's 14 points off the bench.
Karon Boyd added 13 points and five rebounds while
Tyler Johnson added 11 points and six boards.
Tehree Horn added seven points and seven rebounds.
Defensively, Johnson and
Daniel Parrish had two steals.
USC Aiken took a 6-3 lead on a lay-up by
Jameel Rideout. Up 14-13, McCoy hit a jumper and Parrish canned two free throws for an 18-13 advantage.
The Pacers maintained a 22-19 edge but the visitors managed to knot it at 24-24. The Hurricanes took a 33-28 lead into the break after a late three-point basket.
Trailing 42-35, Johnson hit a jumper. Moments later, Horn canned a basket. After a steal by Boyd, he hit two free throws making it a one-point game.
Rideout's free throw pulled the team within one, 43-42, before
Demitrios Dixon nailed a runner for a one-point margin.
The back-and-forth affair saw neither team able to take more than a three-point lead for much of the rest of the game.
Down by three, 55-52, Johnson hit a three-point bucket. With 2:42 to play, Rideout buried a jumper to go up by two. The visitors took a 58-57 lead before Boyd tied it on a free throw with 40 seconds remaining. The Hurricanes converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 20 seconds left. USC Aiken missed a shot and was forced to foul. The visitors hit a free throw for the final tally.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 20-of-57 from the floor (77.3 percent). The squad canned 17-of-22 from the free throw stripe (77.3 percent).
