DUE WEST, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team registered a 2-0 victory at Erskine Saturday afternoon in the season-opening match for both teams.
After the match was moved to Due West, S.C., Saturday morning, head coach
Tina Murphy's team thrived despite the adversity.
USC Aiken pushed forward early as
Megan Gettys and
Shiloh Pirro each had shots on goal in the first six minutes of action.
In the 11
th minute,
Kaydence Moore turned away the first shot on frame by the home team.
The Pacers continued their offensive pressure as
Caroline Czarnecki,
Olivia Pall and
Sonya Villarreal had attempts in the next 10 minutes of action.
At the 30:06 mark, Gettys took a free kick and promptly blasted the shot past the keeper for what turned out to be the match-winning goal from just outside the box.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the second period of play, Murphy's team was able to extend the lead in the 69
th minute when
Jackie Montes found Pall for a 2-0 edge. Pall blasted the shot from 20 yards out.
The Flying Fleet's next shot on goal came at the 80:52 mark, but Moore managed to turn away the attempt, solidifying the shutout.
For the match, USC Aiken held an 18-6 edge in shots, including a 9-2 lead in shots on goal. The Pacer offense garnered six corner kicks compared to three by the Flying Fleet.
Between the pipes, Moore got the starting nod and posted two saves en route to the clean slate.
Gettys led the team with five shots, including three on goal. Pall had three shots, including two on frame.
This marks the first season-opening victory for the program since a 4-1 victory over Mars Hill on Aug. 31, 2017.
