MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a 5-4 decision at Georgia College Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers stand at 18-15 overall and 5-8 in league play.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, head coach
Jaclin Poole's team knotted the score.
Taylor Butts led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Lauren Wexler. After moving to third on a groundout, Butts raced home on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats regained the margin with a pair of runs in the bottom of the stanza, but Poole's team was up for the challenge. USC Aiken cut the deficit to one with a run in the fourth. With one away,
Jena Dewalt blasted a solo round-tripper to make it 3-2.
The score remained the same until the sixth.
Brianna Dow led off the frame with a single to the gap in left center field and came home on a
Mallory Shaver double. With two down,
Skylar Morley singled to center field, pushing across
Courtney Leisner, who came in as a pinch runner for Shaver.
Georgia College tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth and ended up scoring the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh inning.
For the game, Dewalt and Shaver each had a pair of hits in the loss. Shaver registered a pair of doubles as did
Ashlyn White. Dewalt's hit was a home run. Butts, Dewalt, Dow and Leisner all crossed home plate.
In the circle,
Payton Baker got the start and worked 4.0 innings. She gave up three runs, but only one was earned. Baker had two strikeouts.
Lakyn Phillips tossed the final 2.2 frames and gave up two runs, but only one was earned. She also had a pair of strikeouts.
