AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team picked up a pair of wins at Augusta Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-2 and 6-0.
The Pacers are now 15-7 overall and 2-0 in league play.
In game one, head coach
Jaclin Poole's team trailed 1-0 on an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
USC Aiken was unable to get on the board until the fifth.
Holly Daum led off the inning with a bunt and moved to second on an error. With two down,
Jena Dewalt singled home Daum, knotting the score at 1-1.
Neither team could push across the go-ahead run during regulation. In the ninth,
Emily Ayers singled to left field and moved to second on
Brooke Moore's base knock.
Lauren Wexler grounded out, pushing runners to second and third. Daum's sacrifice fly made it 2-1 before
Shircoria Bosket's base hit drove in Moore for a 3-1 lead.
AU would plate a run in the bottom of the ninth, but
Payton Baker struck out a batter and forced a foul out to end the game.
Baker threw all nine innings and struck out seven to get the win. She allowed just one earned run.
At the plate, Moore,
Brianna Dow and Moore had two hits apiece. Ayers also walked a pair of times in the win.
In game two, Dow reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a base hit from
Mallory Shaver. With runners on first and second, Moore belted a double to left field, driving in Shaver.
Dewalt led off the third with a base hit to center field and moved to second on a bunt. With runners on second and third, Ayers walked to load the bags. Moore picked up a single, pushing Dewalt across the plate. Wexler's sacrifice fly allowed Shaver to race home for a 3-0 margin.
Taylor Butts led off the fourth with a walk. She moved to second on a wild pitch and hustled to third when the catcher committed an error trying to get the ball back to the pitcher. Two baters later, Dow lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Butts to score.
Poole's team tacked on a run in the sixth when Dow singled in Dewalt, who had recorded a one-out double. Moore led off the seventh with a solo homer over the left field fence for the final 6-0 margin.
In the circle,
Lakyn Phillips was outstanding. She struck out 15 batters and gave up just one hit and walked three in the win.
At the plate, Shaver went four-for-four with two runs scored. Moore had three hits and three RBI while Dow had two RBI. Dewalt crossed home plate twice.
