AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team wrapped up a three-game sweep at Augusta by notching a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 16-7 overall, including 3-0 in PBC play.
The Jaguars got on the board with an unearned run in the third stanza.
The score remained the same until the fifth inning. With two down,
Ashlyn White came in as a pinch hitter and promptly singled to right field.
Jena Dewalt stepped to the plate and promptly smashed a two-run blast over the fence for a 2-1 lead.
The two runs were more than enough for rookie tandem of
Payton Baker and
Lakyn Phillips. Baker worked the first five frames and had four strikeouts. She did not allow a walk and gave up just two hits and one unearned run. Phillips came in for the final two stanzas and struck out a pair of batters and gave up a mere hit.
The home squad had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but head coach
Jaclin Poole's team was up to the challenge.
After forcing two straight outs to start the seventh, Phillips gave up back-to-back walks. A wild pitch put the tying run 60 feet away and the winning run on second base. However, Phillips forced a ground ball to
Brianna Dow, who calmly tossed it to first for the final out. Phillips picked up her first career save as a Pacer.
Dewalt registered two hits, including a homer, and drove in both runs.
Brooke Moore tallied two hits while Dow,
Lauren Wexler and White had hits.
It marks the first time since the 2003-04 seasons that the Pacers have won three straight games at Augusta. It also ties the program's longest win streak at AU.
The Pacers return to action Friday when they host Lander at 5 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
