Pacers Unable To Defeat Saints In Series Finale

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 3-2 decision at Flagler College Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

The Pacers are now 11-18 overall and 4-8 in PBC play. The Saints improve to 16-13 on the season and 9-3 against conference action.

Once again, Jeff Cyr was the catalyst for the squad. With one down in the top of the first, he smacked a double to the gap in left center field. After moving to third on a groundout by Jackson Hannon, Cyr raced home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

The Saints' offense got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 3-1 advantage. However, interim head coach Michael Holder's team trimmed the deficit in the eighth. On the fourth pitch of the at bat, Carson Suess belted an offering over the wall in left center field to make it 3-2. Two batters later, Cyr ripped a pitch to left field for a double, but he was left stranded with back-to-back outs.

USC Aiken was unable to tie the game in the ninth inning.

For the game, AJ Deibel got the start on the mound. He worked 5.2 innings. Deibel gave up three runs – two of which were earned – on 10 hits. He struck out a pair of Saints. Austin Sandifer tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. Four of his outs were via ground balls.  Dylan Wilhelm worked the final two-thirds of an inning. He picked up a strikeout.

At the plate, Cyr led the way with a pair of hits - both of which were doubles. He scored one of the two runs for the visitors. Tai Gilbert and Suess each had a hit. The base knock for Suess was a round-tripper. Kaden Blankenship and Hannon each drew walks.

The Pacers return to action Thursday when they play Augusta University in a neutral-site affair at SRP Park. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
