NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team picked up a 7-5 non-conference victory over Augusta Wednesday evening at SRP Park.
The Pacers are now 12-18 on the season. The Jaguars drop to 10-18.
Interim head coach
Michael Holder's team was led by
Nick Tripp's three-hit performance. He drove in one and scored once as well.
Tai Gilbert,
Scott Huntley and
Sean McQuillan registered two hits apiece. Huntley had a double as did
Jose Hernandez.
McQuillan crossed home plate twice.
Kaden Blankenship, Gilbert, Hernandez, Huntley and Tripp each scored once in the win. Gilbert,
Jackson Hannon, Hernandez, Huntley, McQuillan and Tripp all drove in one run apiece.
Louie Smith got the starting nod and worked two frames. He struck out three batters.
Luke Parker came in during the bottom of the third and worked the next 5.1 innings. He struck out six and did not surrender a run.
Jacob Fletcher struck out one while tossing a scoreless ninth.
USC Aiken got things going in a hurry with a run in the top of the first. With one away, McQuillan registered an infield single. Two batters later, he swiped second. Tripp scored when Tripp singled to left field and the Jaguar committed an error to make it 1-0.
Holder's team pushed the score to 3-0 with two runs in the second. Blankenship singled to lead off the stanza. Two batters later, he hustled home on a double by Hernandez. Huntley's double extended the advantage to 3-0.
After the designated home team plated five runs in the third, USC Aiken knotted the contest in the fourth. Gilbert led off the inning with a single. He moved to third on a base knock from Huntley, who moved to second on the throw. Gilbert scored when Hannon reached on an error. McQuillan's hit drove in Huntley, knotting the score at 5-5.
The score remained tied until the seventh. Tripp notched a one-out single and trotted to second when
Carson Suess earned a base on balls. Two batters later, Gilbert knocked in what turned out to be the game-winning run on a base hit to right field.
USC Aiken tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Tripp lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored McQuillan, who had reached on an error.
