AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of games to Georgia Southwestern Saturday by scores of 4-1 and 5-1.
The Pacers are now 18-14 on the season and 5-7 in PBC play.
Trailing 2-0 in the third,
Lauren Wexler singled and moved to second on a throwing error. A groundout pushed her to third. Wexler scored on a wild pitch, making it 2-1.
The Hurricanes added a run in the fourth and fifth to push the score to 4-1.
USC Aiken tried to get things going in the final two innings. In the sixth,
Brianna Dow blasted a pitch off the wall. However, she was left stranded. Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team was down to its last out when
Jena Dewalt entered as a pinch hitter and ripped an offering to right field for a double. However, she was unable to cross home plate.
For the game, Dow and Wexler had two hits apiece. Wexler scored the team's lone run. Dewalt and
Brooke Moore also had hits in the contest.
In the circle,
Lakyn Phillips got the start and worked five innings. She had five strikeouts and gave up four runs – three of which were earned.
Rebekah Cook tossed the final two frames. She recorded a strikeout.
In the nightcap, USC Aiken trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. With two away,
Skylar Morley beat out a ball to the shortstop for a single. Dewalt swung at the first pitch and singled.
Ashlyn White then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases.
Holly Daum drew a full-count walk to bring in Morley. However, the Pacers were unable to push across another run in the stanza.
The visitors plated a run in the fifth and seventh innings for a 5-1 edge.
For the game, Dewalt, Dow, Morley and Shaver had hits. Daum registered one RBI.
Payton Baker had two strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
