AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 4-3 win over visiting Newberry Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 6-7 overall and while the Wolves fall to 14-3.
Interim head coach
Michael Holder's team jumped on the board with a run in the third frame.
Tyler Littlefield led off the inning with a walk and hustled to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Sean McQuillan.
Jeff Cyr's base hit pushed him to third base. Littlefield scored on
Josh Sharp's fielder's choice for a 1-0 edge.
Joel Haney kept the visitors off the board with his outstanding work. Then, USC Aiken added a run in the sixth for a 2-0 advantage. After
Nick Tripp reached on an error,
Luke Parker came in as a pinch runner.
Jackson Hannon laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing Parker to second base.
Kaden Blankenship drew a walk and a groundout by
Dalton Graves moved everyone up. Two batters later with the bags full, a wild pitch allowed Parker to race home for the two-run lead.
Newberry trimmed the deficit to one with a run in the eighth only to see Holder's team increase the lead in the bottom of the frame.
Tyler Littlefield plated a pair of Pacers with the bases loaded for a 4-1 lead. Hannon and Blankenship scored on the single.
For the game, Blankenship, Cyr, Hannon and Littlefield had hits for the victors. Hannon had the team's lone extra base hit, which was a triple. Littlefield drove in a pair of runs while Sharp was credited with one RBI.
On the mound, Haney worked seven scoreless innings to get the win. He struck out five and gave up five hits without walking any.
