Mallory Shaver Hits Two Homers At No. 23 Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of hard-fought games at No. 23 Anderson Sunday afternoon.

Game scores were 4-3 and 5-1.

The Pacers are now 7-7 on the season while the Trojans stand at 15-1.

In game one, Anderson posted a run in the first and two more in the third for a 3-0 edge. Although USC Aiken had chances early on, the team was unable to push across a run until the seventh inning.

With two down in the seventh, Jena Dewalt got things going with a solo blast to straight-away center field. Moments later, Brianna Dow ripped an offering with a line-drive round-tripper over the center field wall, pulling the team within one at 3-2. Rookie Mallory Shaver crushed a pitch over the left field fence, knotting the score at 3-3.

The back-to-back-to-back round-trippers marked the first time USC Aiken has done that in recent history.

The Trojans managed to plate the winning run with one down in the bottom of the frame.

For the game, Shaver went four-for-four. Emily Ayers and Dewalt each wrapped out two hits. Holly Daum and Dow had one base hit apiece.

In the circle, Payton Baker worked 6.1 frames and had six strikeouts. She gave up four earned runs on seven hits.

In game two, Shaver broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with another long ball, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The Trojans took the lead with three runs in the fifth before adding a pair of runs in the sixth.

For the game, Shaver picked up three of the team's six base hits. Dewalt, Brooke Moore and Ashlyn White accounted for the other base knocks for head coach Jaclin Poole's team.

Shaver singled in the first while Moore had a base hit in the second. After scoring a run in the fourth, Ayers walked and moved to second but was left stranded.

In the fifth, White singled. With two down and the bases empty, Dewalt singled but was forced out on a fielder's choice. USC Aiken hit into an inning-ending double play in the sixth. Lauren Wexler walked in the seventh but was out on a fielder's choice.

In the circle, Lakyn Phillips took the complete-game loss. She struck out 10 and walked just three in the contest.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Erskine for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at PacerSports.com.
