FRANKFORT, Ky. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team jumped on top of Kentucky State early and cruised to a 67-49 victory Monday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 7-4 on the season while KSU stands at 6-4.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by the tandem of
Marta Rivera and
Emily Trushel. The dyad had 14 points apiece.
Jentri Worley put up 11 points, eight boards and seven assists in the outing.
Hailey Unger accounted for nine points while
Annalise Malone added eight points and five rebounds.
Delaney Trushel chipped in seven points. She snagged eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
Madison Williams and
Kelsie Woodard added two points apiece.
USC Aiken started the game on a 12-3 spurt and never looked back. Down 3-2, Worley gave the visitors the lead for good on a lay-up. With 6:44 to play,
Emily Trushel converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 7-3 lead. Worley canned a shot from distance before Unger's jumper extended the margin to nine, 12-3. Miller's team held a 17-12 margin heading into the second frame.
The home squad got within three but
Emily Trushel found Rivera for a lay-up at the 9:15 mark. Worley and Malone each hit shots for a 23-14 edge. When Unger found the bottom of the net at the 5:27 mark, the visitors maintained a 27-16 lead. Up 36-24 with under a minute to go before intermission, Worley found Rivera for a bucket and a 14-point margin at the break.
Holding a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter, USC Aiken extended the advantage to 20 when
Emily Trushel found Rivera for a shot from distance at the 2:12 mark.
Breanna Gustave found Woodard on the ensuing possession for a 55-33 lead. Four straight points by KSU at the end of the third quarter made it 55-37.
KSU cut the deficit to 12 on a pair of occasions in the final quarter. USC Aiken led 58-46 but went on a 7-0 spurt to put the game out of reach. During the run, Unger made a shot. Then,
Emily Trushel took a pass from her sister for a lay-up. On the next possession, Worley hit
Delaney Trushel for a three-ball and a 65-46 advantage with 2:26 to go.
For the game, USC Aiken buried 26-of-51 from the floor (51.0 percent). The team hit four shots from distance and netted 11-of-14 from the charity stripe (78.6 percent). Miller's team controlled the paint, netting 32 points in the lane. The squad tallied 14 points off turnovers and got 18 points off the bench.
