AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team jumped out to an early 17-point lead and never looked back in the 82-55 victory over Coastal Georgia.
The Pacers are now 2-2 on the season while the Mariners fall to 1-6.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Tehree Horn's game-high 23 points. He also added seven assists and seven rebounds – both of which were team-high accolades.
Tyler Johnson and
Daniel Parrish each hit for 10 points while
Jalen McCoy added nine points.
Karon Boyd accounted for eight points and seven boards.
Jameel Rideout chipped in seven markers.
USC Aiken jumped out to a 19-2 lead just 5:58 into the game and never looked back in the blowout victory. Tied at 2-2, the Pacers embarked on a 17-0 run.
DeShawn Thomas got things going with four straight points before Horn found Rideout for a three-ball. A steal and lay-up by
Tyler Johnson pushed it to 11-2. Johnson and Horn hit back-to-back shots from distance before Johnson made another lay-up for the 17-point advantage.
Leading 24-17, McCoy buried a jumper.
Daniel Parrish and Horn hit back-to-back shots for a 13-point edge. Up 40-20, USC Aiken slowly pushed the advantage to 28 after four straight charity tosses from Horn. Parrish's jumper extended the margin to 52-21 before taking the lead at halftime 52-22.
The Pacers controlled the flow of the second half, going up 57-24 on a lay-up by Horn for the largest lead of the game. Vanderslice's squad maintained at least a 25-point edge until the waning moments of the game.
Coastal Georgia cut the margin to 23 on a pair of occasions, but USC Aiken quickly answered. Up 76-53,
Devin Evans tipped in a shot. Moments later,
Chedlet Delva connected on an inside shot for an 80-55 advantage. Boyd's shot off a pass from
Dwight Canady, Jr., registered the final two points of the evening.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 31-of-51 from the floor (38.3 percent). The squad connected on 15-of-20 from the free throw line (75.0 percent). The Pacers registered a 51-36 edge on the glass, including an 18-1 spread on the offensive boards. The 18 offensive rebounds led to 15 second-chance points for the home team.
USC Aiken outscored the visitors 46-12 in the paint, gave up just two second-chance points and registered 18 fast break points in the win.
