MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Freshman
Megan Gettys propelled the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory Wednesday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 6-3-4 overall and complete PBC play with a 4-3-3 mark. It is the first time in program history USC Aiken has finished above .500 against league foes. In 2000 and 2006, the team finished with a .500 mark. The Bobcats fall to 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-1 against conference foes.
The Bobcats got on the board in the 22
nd minute of action. Although USC Aiken quickly countered, the squad was unable to break through with a score in the first half.
Jackie Montes rocketed a pair of attempts that missed after the score, coming in the 22
nd and 28
th minutes, respectively.
Head coach
Tina Murphy's team was aggressive at the outset of the second period. Just 14 seconds in,
Sonya Villarreal ripped a shot that was stopped by the keeper. Gettys followed her with a shot that missed just left of the frame at the 45:47 mark.
Villarreal went back on the attack four minutes later, but her shot was saved. Montes accounted for a shot in the 51
st minute that was stopped.
USC Aiken possessed the ball down the right side of the pitch and crossed it toward the far post. However, a defender inadvertently knocked in the cross for an own goal, making the score 1-1 at the 61:31 mark.
The Pacers continued applying pressure the remainder of the half. GCSU had a shot that was high with 1:42 to play. USC Aiken gained possession of the ball and the Bobcats were whistled for a foul with 35 seconds to go. That's when Gettys took the kick and sent the shot rocketing past the goalkeeper's right to the left side of the goal for the winning tally.
For the match, USC Aiken posted 10 shots, including six on goal.
Kaydence Moore got the starting nod and registered three saves while
Caitlin Thomason had one save in the second period.
The victory marked the third consecutive one in the series for USC Aiken. Two of the wins have come in Milledgeville.
The Pacers return to action Saturday for the regular-season finale when they host Allen at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
