Pacers Sweep Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team had three student-athletes reach double figures for kills en route to a 3-0 sweep at Georgia College & State Tuesday evening.

The Pacers are now 13-7 overall, including 4-5 in league play. 

Head coach Glenn Cox's team was led by the trio of Emily Lammers, Sadie McKay and Anna Sommer as each had 10 kills apiece. 

Abbey Schad slammed home seven kills while Kaitlyn Rodriguez added six. 

Mallory Barash led everyone with 36 assists and 15 digs. Kari Mercer added 13 digs while Rodriguez and McKay had eight and seven, respectively.

At the service line, Barash and Mercer had three aces apiece while McKay had two aces.

Schad and Sommer had one solo block apiece while Schad and Barash had a block assist. 

Tied at 11-11 in the first frame, McKay slammed home a kill. She followed it up with a pair of aces. Up 15-13, Lammers had a kill before Rodriguez found the court for two more points. USC Aiken held a 20-16 lead and quickly extended the advantage with two miscues from GCSU ad a kill from McKay. Leading 23-17, Schad and Lammers had back-to-back points for the win.

Trailing 14-4 in the second frame, Cox's team went on a run. Barash had a kill. Two plays later, Schad and Barash combined for a block. On the ensuing play, Schad stuffed an attempt to make it 14-8.

Down 15-8, Schad started another streak with a kill. McKay had back-to-back points before the Bobcats had two consecutive errors. Barash befuddled the defense with an ace and another miscue by the home team knotted the frame at 15-15.

Tied at 21-21, GCSU managed to score the next two points. However, USC Aiken went on a 5-1 run to end the set. With the score tied at 24-24, McKay registered the go-ahead point prior to Barash finishing off the Bobcats with an ace.

In a back-and-forth third stanza, the Pacers trailed 21-18. However, an error made it a two-point contest. McKay pulled the team within one before an error by the home squad knotted it at 21-21. Two plays later, Mercer served up an ace for a 23-21 lead. Up by one, McKay found the court for a point. Barash once again ended the frame with an ace for the 25-22 win.
