ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
Chidinma Okafor scored a career-high 31 points Saturday as the University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost 93-87 at Flagler.
The Pacers are now 4-7 on the year, including 0-3 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by Okafor's 31-point, nine-rebound effort.
Jentri Worley added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists while
Emily Trushel tallied 14 markers.
Madison Williams and
Delaney Trushel added nine and eight points, respectively.
Okafor's 31 points marked the fifth-most points by a Pacer in the Division II era. She's tied with Jami Cornwell (vs. Georgia College on Feb. 9, 2002 and Daniela Tarailo at Augusta State on Feb. 2, 2013). The 14 made field goals tied the USC Aiken Division II record, which was set by former standout Kawjelin Farrar against Georgia Southwestern on Dec. 1, 2018.
USC Aiken and Flagler played a back-and-forth affair during the first frame. The high-scoring first quarter saw Miller's team net 23 points, which is the second-most points scored by the Pacers in a first quarter in school history.
Trailing 11-10, Worley found Okafor for a jumper, giving the visitors a 12-11 edge at the 6:04 mark. A Crawford lay-up pushed the advantage to three, 14-11. Tied at 18-18, Williams buried a jumper at the 3:30 mark of the period. A
Delaney Trushel free throw and an
Emily Trushel lay-up made it 23-20 with 1:17 to go in the quarter. Flagler would net the final five points of the stanza for a 25-23 lead.
Miller's team trailed 45-33 at halftime, but the squad would cut into the margin by outscoring the Saints 24-18 in the third. Down 58-48,
Ireona Brooks found Okafor for a jumper with 2:17 to go in the frame. Moments later, Okafor would snag an offensive rebound and make a lay-up, making it a six-point game. With 1:05 to go, Brooks nailed a three-ball, pulling the team within three at 58-55. Brooks found Okafor for a jumper with four seconds to go in the third quarter, making it 63-57.
USC Aiken would continue its outstanding play early in the fourth quarter. Okafor netted four straight points, pulling the visitors within one at 65-64 with 8:51 to play in the game. Crawford's bucket with 7:24 to go once again pulled the Pacers within one, 67-66.
USC Aiken took the lead at 70-69 when
Delaney Trushel found Okafor for a lay-up. After a Flagler basket, Williams found
Emily Trushel for a one-point edge. Down 76-72,
Delaney Trushel hit a pair of charity tosses with 4:27 to play, making it 76-74. Flagler would make it an 84-74 game with a mini run. Miller's team would cut it to six at the end of the game on a three-point shot by
Emily Trushel.
The 30-point fourth quarter marked the fourth-highest scoring frame in school history. It was also the second-most points scored in a fourth quarter in school history.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 34-of-72 from the floor (47.2 percent), including six-of-20 from downtown (30 percent). The squad would hit 13-of-15 from the charity stripe (86.7 percent).
