AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team recorded the fourth-most points in its Division II history, notching a 115-87 win over Young Harris Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 12-5 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Mountain Lions are 3-14 overall and 0-8 against PBC foes.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by a career-high effort from
Preston Parks with 26 points. He also added five assists.
Tehree Horn accounted for 25 points and eight boards while
Jalen McCoy added 16 points.
David Strother came off the bench to net 14 points, dish out four assists and post a game-high three steals.
LaTreavin Black chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
Tyler Johnson and
Samba Ndiaye had five points and three blocks apiece while
Melvin Archie,
Kameron Little and
Mason McMurray tallied four points apiece.
Demitrios Dixon and
Caleb Furr each netted a pair of points.
Horn opened the game with back-to-back three-point buckets, giving the Pacers a 6-0 lead just 47 seconds in. After YHC pulled within one, Parks found McCoy for a lay-up. Dixon connected with Parks for a three-ball, making it 11-5.
USC Aiken extended the margin to 16-7 when Parks found Horn on a fast break. A McMurray charity toss pushed the lead to 10, 19-9. The Mountain Lions clawed within four at 21-17, but Ndiaye hit an inside shot at the 10:03 mark.
Vanderslice's team took a 46-31 lead with 3:41 to go in the half when Parks buried yet another shot from distance. YHC cut the deficit to nine but Black hit a free throw. Parks also hit one with 14 ticks on the clock, giving the home squad an 11-point lead at the break.
USC Aiken netted the first eight points of the second half and never looked back. Black got things going with a jumper and Dixon followed it up with a fade-away shot on a fast break. Dixon then found McCoy prior to a steal from Parks that led to a pair of free throws from Horn.
YHC cut it to 15 but a three-ball from Strother extended the margin to 20, 73-53, at the 14:19 mark. Moments later, Vanderslice's team extended the lead to 30 when Johnson converted an old-fashioned three-point play.
A lay-up by Strother with 5:31 to go allowed the Pacers to hit the century mark. After the last media time-out, Vanderslice subbed in Archie and Little. Archie quickly got on the board with a lay-up with 1:49 to go. He added another bucket with 1:00 to play while Little hit a pair of free throws and connected on a field goal in the final minute.
For the game, USC Aiken buried 44-of-76 from the floor (57.9 percent), including 10-of-26 from downtown (38.5 percent). The squad held a 44-37 edge on the glass. Vanderslice's team dominated the paint, 58-30 and converted 19 turnovers into 20 points. The squad also more than doubled the visitors in second-chance points, 23-11. USC Aiken led for 39:48 in the game.
