AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a hard-fought 5-4 game at Georgia Southwestern Tuesday evening.
The Pacers are now 13-13 on the season while the Hurricanes improve to 14-12.
After a scoreless first two innings, the visitors jumped on top of the home squad with a three-run third frame.
James Eckert singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on
Sean McQuillan's base knock.
Morgan Hyde's sacrifice bunt allowed Eckert to race home for a 1-0 edge.
Moments later,
Jackson Hannon unleashed a two-run homer to left field for a 3-0 margin.
The Pacers pushed the advantage to 4-0 with another run in the fourth.
Tyler Littlefield singled to shortstop and hustled to second on a groundout by Carson Seuss. Eckert's base hit pushed Littlefield to third base. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up 90 feet as Littlefield crossed home plate on the play.
The Hurricanes made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the fourth.
USC Aiken put a runner on base in the fifth and sixth frames, but the squad was unable to capitalize. GSW posted a pair of runs in the seventh, making it a one-run game.
In the ninth,
Jose Hernandez walked and stole second base, but a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball ended the threat.
The Hurricanes tied the game with one away and won the game with a two-out single.
For the game, Eckert led the team with three hits. Hannon, Littlefield and McQuillan had two hits apiece. Hannon drove in a pair of runs.
On the mound,
Blake Seigler worked four innings and had six strikeouts.
Evan Condon tossed two frames and had one strikeout.
Austin Sandifer registered a strikeout as did
Henry Cartrett and Hyde.
USC Aiken tallied four runs on nine hits with an error. The Hurricanes had five runs on 10 hits.
The Pacers return to action Friday with a three-game series against Augusta beginning at 3 p.m.
