Pacers Pick Up Doubleheader Sweep Of Jaguars

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of Augusta Friday evening by scores of 5-4 (11 innings) and 10-1.

The Pacers are now 15-13 on the season and 14-12 in league play.

In the first game, AU took a 3-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first and another in the second inning.

USC Aiken was held without a run until the fourth stanza. With one away, Nick Tripp ripped a single to left field. David Jacobs followed him up with a base knock, putting runners on first and second. Jeff Cyr's single plated Tripp and Tyler Littlefield reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Jacobs to make it 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until the seventh frame. Marcus Mastellone reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from James Eckert. With two down, Morgan Hyde's single to left field plated Mastellone, knotting the score at 3-3.

With two down in the eighth, David Jacobs singled and moved to third on Cyr's base knock. Moments later, he scored on a wild pitch for the 4-3 advantage.

In the ninth inning, the Jaguars threatened but Henry Cartrett shut them down. USC Aiken came to bat and Sean McQuillan singled with two away. After swiping second, Hyde ripped a pitch back up the middle that hit the pitcher, putting runners on first and third. With runners on second and third, Jackson Hannon tore into a pitch, but the right fielder made a tremendous grab against the fence, sending the game into extra innings.

James Eckert rocketed a one-out pitch down the right field line for a double with one down in the 11th inning. Two batters later, Hyde laced a 2-2 pitch to right center field, plating Eckert for the game-winning run.

For the game, Jacobs led the way with four hits and scored twice. Hyde had three hits and two RBI. Cyr posted three hits and one RBI.

On the mound, Henry Cartrett worked the final 2.2 innings and got the win. Daniel Wiggins tossed six innings but did not get a decision. Blake Seigler threw 2.1 frames. The trio combined to have nine strikeouts.

In game two, Tripp doubled in McQuillan to get things going in the first inning. Jacobs doubled home Tripp for a 2-0 edge.

The Pacers added three runs in the second inning. After Trey Polewski walked and Stokes Brownlee was hit by a pitch, Eckert doubled in the dyad for a 4-0 lead. Hyde's groundout plated Eckert for a five-run margin.

Leading 5-1 in the fifth, Tripp doubled and scored two batters later on a single by Cyr. USC Aiken added a run in the sixth when McQuillan plated Eckert, who had led off the frame with a base knock.

USC Aiken pushed the advantage to 10-1 with a three-run seventh. Jacobs led off with a single and moved to second on Cyr's walk. With two down, Eckert drew a base on balls. McQuillan lifted a bloop single between three Jaguars, scoring two. Hyde's base hit scored Eckert for the nine-run lead.  

For the game, McQuillan led the way with three hits and three RBI. Tripp had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Jacobs and Eckert had two hits apiece. Eckert crossed home three times while Tripp was plated twice.

On the mound, Lindsey Robinson Jr., was outstanding. He had eight strikeouts over seven innings. Will Varnadore threw a scoreless eighth inning before Joel Haney worked the ninth.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final game of the series starting at 1 p.m.
