NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team rolled to a 13-4 win against Georgia College in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening.
The Pacers are now 16-14 on the season. The Bobcats fall to 15-15.
USC Aiken took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
James Eckert reached on an error and moved to second on a
Morgan Hyde bunt. After each runner swiped a bag,
Jackson Hannon's groundout plated Eckert. Hyde went to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Nick Tripp's groundout.
The Pacers made it 3-0 in the second stanza.
Jeff Cyr led off the inning with a double and moved to third moments later.
Tai Gilbert ripped a double to left field, plating Cyr for the three-run margin.
USC Aiken's bats stayed hot with two more runs in the third.
Leo Horacio singled in Hyde, who led off the inning with a base knock. Horacio moved to second on a wild pitch and hustled to third on the throw. The errant throw allowed Hannon to race home for the 5-0 lead.
Leading 5-1 in the sixth, Gilbert belted a solo homer over the left field wall with two away.
Marcus Mastellone reached on an error, going all the way to second. Eckert doubled him home. A fielding error allowed Hyde to reach while Eckert went to third. After a pitching change, Hannon singled in Eckert for the 8-1 advantage.
The Bobcats plated three runs in the top of the eighth frame, but USC Aiken put the game away with a five-run response.
Mastellone led off with a walk and moved to second when Eckert reached on an error. Hyde reached on a miscue, allowing Mastellone to score. Hannon rocketed a single to score Eckert. After Tripp walked to load the bases again, Horacio reached on a fielder's choice, plating Hyde.
Cyr continued to add to the lead with his base hit up the middle, allowing Hannon to trot home.
Tyler Littlefield completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly, plating Horacio.
For the game, Cyr, Eckert, Gilbert, Hannon and Hyde notched two hits apiece. Hannon drove in three runs while scoring twice. Eckert and Hyde each crossed home three times while Mastellone did twice. Gilbert and Horacio each drove in two runs.
Blake Seigler got the start and went five innings to pick up the win. He struck out six batters while giving up just one run. The six USC Aiken pitchers combined to have 10 strikeouts while allowing just one walk and four runs on six hits.
The Pacers return to action Saturday for a doubleheader at home against Young Harris. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
