AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team swept both games of the doubleheader against Young Harris, winning 4-2 and 14-9 Saturday.
The Pacers are now 18-14 overall and 16-13 in league play.
USC Aiken got on the board with a run in the third inning.
Marcus Mastellone singled and moved to second on an error. He went to third on
Morgan Hyde's sacrifice bunt and raced home on
Jackson Hannon's sacrifice fly.
The Pacers pushed it to 2-0 in the fourth when
David Jacobs singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Littlefield. In the fourth,
James Eckert singled and scored on Hyde's double. Two batters later, Hyde was plated on
Nick Tripp's base knock to right field for a four-run margin.
The Mountain Lions scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning, making it 4-2.
For the game,
James Eckert was the lone Pacer to post a multi-hit game. Hyde had the team's lone extra-base hit, notching a double.
On the mound,
Daniel Wiggins registered the final home start of his career. He responded by throwing 6.1 outstanding innings. Wiggins gave up two earned runs and had seven strikeouts on 100 pitches.
Wiggins picked up the victory while
Austin Sandifer earned the save after throwing the final 2.2 innings of work.
USC Aiken trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but the bats were hot immediately.
James Eckert doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Hyde doubled and moved to third on Hannon's base hit.
Nick Tripp singled him home and he moved to second on
Leo Horacio's sacrifice bunt.
Jeff Cyr singled home both Pacers for a 4-1 lead. After a
Tai Gilbert single,
Stokes Brownlee doubled, plating Cyr. Gilbert scored on a fielder's choice by Eckert. Hyde singled home
Trey Polewski, who had walked earlier in the inning for a 7-1 advantage.
USC Aiken added to its lead in the third. Brownlee led off the inning with a walk. He moved to third after a walk to Polewski and a fly ball to Eckert. A sacrifice fly from Hyde allowed Brownlee to trot home for an 8-1 score. Tripp singled home Polewski, giving the home squad a 9-1 working margin.
USC Aiken made it 10-2 in the fourth inning but the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game. The visitors scored two in the fifth frame and three in seventh, pulling within three at 10-7.
The Pacers plated four runs in the seventh to make it 14-7. Tripp's groundout plated Hyde. Cyr doubled home Hannon and Gilbert's single allowed Horacio and Cyr to score for the seven-run lead.
The visitors plated two runs in the ninth, but USC Aiken shut the door on the Mountain Lions.
For the game, Hyde led the way with three hits. Cyr, Eckert, Gilbert and Tripp had two hits apiece. Cyr and Tripp each drove in three runs. Polewski scored three times. Cyr, Hannon and Hyde each crossed home twice.
On the mound,
Lindsey Robinson Jr., worked 4.2 innings. He struck out four batters.
Austin Hohm worked two frames while
Henry Cartrett had four strikeouts in two innings of work.
Will Varnadore came in for one-third of an inning.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
