MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a pair of games against nationally-ranked Georgia College, falling 11-6 before winning 10-7.
The Pacers are now 5-7 on the year.
In game one, USC Aiken trailed 6-0 in the top of the fifth.
Carson Suess was hit by a pitch and newcomer
James Eckert launched a two-run shot over the left field fence, slicing the deficit to four at 6-2. With one down,
Jeff Cyr singled and scored on
Jackson Hannon's double to left.
The Bobcats answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame and two in the sixth to make it 9-3.
USC Aiken trimmed the deficit to three in the eighth inning.
Morgan Hyde singled and moved to second on a
Tyler Littlefield walk. With one down,
Trey Polewski walked. All three came home on a
Sean McQuillan double to right field. However, the Bobcats tacked on two runs for the 11-6 final.
For the game, Cyr and McQuillan each had an extra base hit. McQuillan tallied three RBI to lead the way. Cyr, Hannon and Hyde had two hits apiece.
In game two, Georgia College struck for a run in the bottom of the first, but USC Aiken knotted it in the third. After McQuillan walked, stole second and scampered to third on an error, Hyde's groundout allowed McQuillan to cross home plate.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Littlefield singled to right field with two outs. A Cyr double put two on base before a Polewski walk loaded the bags. A throwing error allowed Littlefield to score.
Marcus Mastellone stepped up and belted a single to center field for a 4-3 edge.
The Pacers added three runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 10-3 advantage. Hannon singled in Hyde and McQuillan to get things going in the seventh. Hannon scored on a groundout by Littlefield.
In the eighth, Hyde and McQuillan each scored when
Nick Tripp reached on a fielder's choice. Tripp came around to score on a Littlefield base knock to center field.
The Bobcats plated four runs in the ninth, but USC Aiken closed the cage on the Bobcats in the 10-7 victory.
For the game, Littlefield and Mastellone each had two hits. Hannon, Littlefield and Mastellone had two RBI each. McQuillan scored three times while Hyde crossed home twice.
On the mound,
Alex Stobert went 8.1 innings en route to the win. He gave up six runs on nine hits and had three strikeouts.
Henry Cartrett threw the final two-thirds of an inning, posting one strikeout.
The Pacers return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they play a doubleheader at Columbus State.
