COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a doubleheader at Columbus State Saturday afternoon. The squad won the first game 5-2 before falling 5-4 in 15 innings in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 6-8 on the season.
In game one, USC Aiken jumped on top with three runs in the third and one in the fourth. The Pacers tacked on another in the fifth to go up 5-0.
In the fourth, Littlefield singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He raced home on a base knock from Cyr, making it 4-0.
Tripp's solo homer with one out in the fifth extended the margin to 5-0.
For the game,
Sean McQuillan and Tripp had three hits apiece. Cyr added two in the win.
Daniel Wiggins worked 5.1 frames, striking out three while giving up just one earned run on three hits. He picked up the win while
Morgan Hyde tossed the final two stanzas to get the save. Both pitchers, along with
Austin Hohm, had three strikeouts apiece.
In game two, Cyr singled in Tripp in the third to go up 1-0. Littlefield, who singled earlier in the inning, crossed home plate when Horacio flew out, making it 2-0.
The Cougars tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Jackson Hannon gave the visitors a 3-2 lead with a solo blast in the seventh inning. USC Aiken pushed the advantage to 4-2 in the ninth when Hyde reached on a fielder's choice, allowing McQuillan to race home. McQuillan had reached after being hit by a pitch and he promptly swiped second base. He moved to third on a throwing error.
CSU tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
USC Aiken had a chance to break things open in the 12th. Tripp reached on an error and moved to second.
Joel Haney came in as a pinch hitter and promptly went to third on a wild pitch. With only one down, Cyr was intentionally walked.
Trey Polewski's sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Mastellone walked, but Eckert was unable to reach base, keeping the score at 4-4.
The Pacers had two on in the 14th as well, but the visitors could not push across a run.
The Cougars plated the game-winning run with one down in the 15th inning.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final game of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
