Pacers Fall To Cougars In Series Finale

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 14-11 decision to Columbus State in the final game of the series.

The Pacers are now 6-9 on the season.

Leo Horacio, Morgan Hyde and Nick Tripp each posted three hits in the game. Jeff Cyr, Tyler Littlefield and Sean McQuillan had two hits apiece.

Tripp led the way with three RBI and scored three runs. Horacio drove in a pair of runs while Hyde and McQuillan each crossed home twice.

USC Aiken tied it at 1-1 in the second when Horacio singled in Tripp, who had singled to lead off the inning. The Pacers made it 5-1 in the third, with three of the runs coming from the homer by Tripp. Three batters later, Horacio singled in Littlefield.

Tied at 5-5 in the fifth, Marcus Mastellone's base hit plated Tripp. USC Aiken pushed the margin to 7-5 in the sixth when Jackson Hannon swiped second and Hyde scored on the throw.

The Cougars scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 14-7 lead. However, the Pacers battled back, plating four runs in the seventh inning.

Cyr got things going with a single and moved to second on a base knock by Horacio. With one down, James Eckert's double plated Cyr. Eckert moved to third on a wild pitch wile Horacio crossed home plate. Sean McQuillan was hit by a pitch and he raced home on Hyde's double.

For the game, USC Aiken pounded out 18 hits, including five extra-base hits.

Alex Stobert started the game and worked five innings. He struck out eight. Connor Christensen, Jacob Rye, Henry Cartrett and Austin Sandifer all saw time on the mound. Rye took the loss.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they take on Georgia Southwestern in a non-conference affair starting at 6 p.m.
