AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory at Young Harris Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 3-2 on the season.
Alie Smith led the balanced scoring attack with a match-best 13 kills while hitting .400.
Sydney Bresee hit .600 for the second time this year after smashing six kills on 10 attempts.
Kayla Duggan and
Alisha Pitt notched four kills apiece while
Anita Cookey-Gam had three.
Sophia Hoffman,
Sophie Meredith and
Kaitlyn Rodriguez each added two kills while
Cat Bodick and
Emily Duggan had one apiece.
Sophie Meredith dished out a match-high 20 assists while
Caroline Foster added 10.
Kayla Duggan and Foster had two aces apiece.
Defensively, Bresee,
Kayla Duggan and Pitt all notched three blocks.
Kari Mercer posted a match-best 13 digs in the win.
Leading 20-16 in the first frame, Foster found Bresee for the kill. After an error on the home team,
Kayla Duggan served up an ace. Two plays later, Smith ended the set with a kill.
Up 9-7 in the second set, USC Aiken embarked on a 7-2 spurt.
Kayla Duggan and Bresee started it off with a block before Meredith found the court with a kill. Bresee added two kills en route to the 16-9 score. The Pacers pushed the lead to 22-10 on a back row kill from
Emily Duggan. Moments later, Pitt's kill made it 24-14 and an error gave head coach
Glenn Cox's team the win.
USC Aiken held a 13-11 lead before Smith and Bresee notched kills while two miscues by the home squad pushed the score to 17-11. Cox's group led 21-14 but points from Smith and two from Hoffman gave the visitors match point. Three plays later, a service error by the Mountain Lions clinched the win for USC Aiken.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play at Lander. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m.
