GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit en route to a 3-2 win at Lander Tuesday evening.
The Pacers are now 4-2 on the year.
Alie Smith led the way with 20 kills while
Kaitlyn Rodriguez garnered 16 kills.
Sydney Bresee accounted for 11 kills in the win.
Caroline Foster distributed 48 assists and had 15 digs for a double-double.
Defensively,
Kari Mercer contributed a career-high 39 digs, which is seventh overall in the USC Aiken record book and fifth for digs in a five-set match . She also totaled a career-high eight assists and a career-best four aces.
Emily Duggan posted 16 digs while
Kayla Duggan chipped in 15 digs. Smith registered 11 digs for a double-double.
After dropping the first two sets,
Kayla Duggan gave the visitors a 13-12 lead in the third frame. After a miscue by the Bearcats, Bresee had a kill and Mercer served up an ace for a 16-12 advantage. Tied at 22, Rodriguez powered home a kill. Bresee and
Kayla Duggan notched a block before Mercer aced the home team for the 25-22 win.
USC Aiken trailed 21-20 in the fourth set, but Pitt slammed down a thunderous kill, sparking a run. Mercer dug an attack and it landed for a kill. Smith served up an ace and after a Lander point, Rodriguez ended the frame with a kill for a 25-22 victory.
Tied at 3-3 in the fifth frame, Bresee garnered a kill. After an error by Lander, Foster found the court for a kill. An attack error by the Bearcats pushed the score to 7-3. Leading 8-4, Foster and Bresee combined for a block. On the ensuing play, Pitt and Smith teamed up for a block, making it 10-4. Up 13-7, the teams traded points before Smith's kill clinched the match for the Pacers.
