AIKEN, S.C. – Playing in rain and hampered by a lightning delay, the University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team lost a 3-1 contest to the University of North Georgia Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 1-8 overall and 0-6 in league play. The Nighthawks improve to 5-5 on the year and 2-4 against conference foes.
The visitors got on the board quickly to start the match. The Nighthawks found the back of the net at the 3:38 mark off a breakaway for a 1-0 edge. Six minutes later, a foul in the box by USC Aiken allowed UNG to have a penalty kick. The Nighthawks increased the advantage to 2-0.
Scoring off a rebound at the 13:45 mark, UNG held a 3-0 advantage.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team battled back in the torrential downpour of rain. USC Aiken pulled within two in the 33
rd minute of play. A free kick by
Maik Spiekermann near the midfield stripe was played into the box.
Jaymee Kambel ended up with it and quickly blasted a shot past the keeper to make it 3-1.
Fans thought USC Aiken netted another goal moments later, but a tremendous give-and-go play was waived off prior to the shot beating the keeper due to the home squad being whistled offside.
For the match,
Felipe Cerda recorded five saves. Ofoje's team registered six shots, including two on frame. Another hit the crossbar.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they travel to Georgia Southwestern at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
