AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 contest to Lander on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 3-10-1 overall and 2-6-1 in league play. The Bearcats improve to 10-4-1 overall and 7-2 against conference foes.
In the opening half,
Tashiana Kwatowski nearly put the home squad on the board. After a foul from 25 yards out, Kwatowski took the kick and curled it around two defenders. The ball sliced toward the near post and ricocheted off the right post. The near miss kept the contest scoreless going into intermission.
Lauren Sigmon rocketed a shot in the 56
th minute, but the Lander keeper managed to make the save.
The Bearcats struck for a goal at the 58:27 mark, but head coach
Tina Murphy's team continued to play tough throughout.
Just 14 seconds after the goal was scored,
Caroline Czarnecki countered with a point-blank shot of her own, but she was turned away.
In the 60
th minute, Kwatowski had another shot that was thwarted by the keeper. Off a corner kick,
Mackenzie Cochrane headed the ball toward the goal, but it was blocked.
With under three minutes to play in regulation,
Baylea Payne rocketed an attempt from 30 yards out that was saved.
In the waning seconds, Murphy's group earned a corner kick.
Alyssa Broad's shot was blocked and went out of bounds.
For the match, USC Aiken tallied eight shots, including five on frame. The Pacers earned three corner kicks.
Mary Cecil played all 90 minutes in goal, registering 11 saves.
It marked the last home match for

Raegan Buchanan,
Tashiana Kwatowski,
Charlotte Mannella,
Baylea Payne and
Lauren Sigmon. The six were honored in a pregame ceremony for their hard work and effort.
Prior to the match, the seniors were honored on the pitch for their hard work and effort throughout their time at USC Aiken.
USC Aiken will compete in the PBC Tournament. The PBC will announce pairings and times in the near future.
