GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team put forth a solid effort but lost a hard-fought 1-0 match at No. 2 Lander in the PBC Quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers conclude the season with a record of 3-11-1. The Bearcats improve to 11-4-1 on the season.
Mary Cecil turned away the first shot on goal in the match, coming off the boot of Romie Llewellyn at the 14:33 mark. The host Bearcats recorded back-to-back corner kicks and converted the second one into a goal at the 15:57 mark.
Neither defense gave the opposing offense many opportunities the rest of the half. Head coach
Tina Murphy's team thwarted two more shots on goal in the waning moments of the period, keeping the contest at 1-0 heading into the second stanza.
In the second half, Murphy's defense was up to the task. The Pacers turned away every single offensive attempt by the home squad.
Cecil registered saves in the 56
th and 60
th minutes of action. An attempt in the 80
th minute was blocked by a USC Aiken defender. Cecil turned away another shot at the 85:37 mark, giving the Pacers one last opportunity to tie the match.
However, USC Aiken was unable to knot the score in the waning minutes.
For the match, Cecil posted seven saves.
