AIKEN, S.C.-
Baylea Payne recorded the match-winning goal in the first overtime period, sending the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Georgia College Wednesday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 3-6 on the year and 2-3 in league play. The Bobcats fall to 7-4 overall and 2-3 against PBC foes.Â
After a scoreless 90 minutes of action, the teams headed into an overtime session. USC Aiken saw a pair of shots taken by the Bobcats in the first two minutes. The squads played near the midfield stripe for two minutes before
Caroline Czarnecki found Payne, who blasted the ball past the keeper for the golden goal.Â
Just five minutes in,
Mackenzie Cochrane launched a shot from 35 yards out off a free kick that missed wide. Payne's attempt in the 18
th minute of play was blocked. A strong defensive presence by USC Aiken enabled the home squad to turn away multiple shots by the Bobcats in the opening frame, allowing the teams to head into the second half scoreless.
USC Aiken's defense was once again up to the challenge in the second half. The Bobcats took 14 shots, including eight of which were on frame.
Mary Cecil managed to stop all eight attempts for head coach
Tina Murphy's team.
Teagan Kersey's stellar shot from 18 yards out in the period was saved.Â
For the match, Cecil totaled an outstanding 15 saves.
