DUE WEST, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader at Erskine Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 before winning 12-6.
The Pacers are now 13-5 on the year.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning of game one,
Katie Painter drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Katelyn Powell knotted the game with a base knock, forcing extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule,
Brooke Moore was placed on second base. After
Jessica Smith was hit by a pitch,
Hanna Hyder replaced her as a pinch runner. Each moved up a bag on a wild pitch. However, a fly ball and a strikeout ended the threat. The Flying Fleet managed to plate the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
For the game, Cockrell went 7.1 innings and took the loss. She struck out four and gave up one earned run. At the plate, Powell recorded three hits and an RBI.

Shircoria Bosket, Painter and
Courtney Strauss all had a hit.
In game two, Moore and Powell had three hits apiece. Hyder, Painter and Strauss each recorded two base knocks. Ayers, Robinson and Smith had one hit apiece.
Strauss drove in three runs while Powell had two RBI. Hyder, Moore and Struass all crossed home twice.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the second, Smith doubled and moved to third on an error. She scored on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1. After a double by Painter, Powell knocked in Hyder and Painter with a double.
Down 6-3 in the top of the fourth, head coach
Jerry Snyder's team erupted for nine unanswered runs, including a seven-run fourth.
Hyder got things going with a single and moved to second on a hit from Painter. With one down, Moore singled in Hyder. Ayers followed it up with a base hit, plating Powell. Strauss ripped a three-run shot over the wall for an 8-6 advantage. Robinson made it back-to-back round-trippers with a solo blast. After Hyder doubled
Maci Hutto to third, Hutto scored after an error to go up 10-6.
In the fifth, Moore scored on a wild pitch and Strauss came home when Smith reached on an error for the final tally.
Melanie Firestone started the game, but
Rebekah Cook came in for the final 6.2 frames. Cook struck out eight batters on the day en route to earning the victory.
