Long Ball Leads USC Aiken Past Fayetteville State

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team hit eight round-trippers in the doubleheader, sweeping Fayetteville State by scores of 10-2 and 10-0.

The Pacers are now 15-5 on the season.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team tied the school record in each contest by launching four round-trippers.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Shircoria Bosket tied the game on an 0-1 pitch. She blasted a solo shot over the scoreboard in right center field. USC Aiken trailed 2-1 in the third, but Brooke Moore gave the Pacers the lead for good when she launched a two-run homer over the left center field fence.

After the Pacers loaded the bags, Deja Robinson unloaded on the first offering, sending the pitch she saw high over the left field fence for her first career grand slam. The base knock let Courtney Strauss, Bosket and Smith to trot home for the 7-2 advantage.

In the fourth, Strauss ripped the first pitch she saw to straight-away center field. USC Aiken closed out the game in the fifth with two more runs. Brianna Dow's double plated Robinson. Katelyn Powell finished the game with a walk-off double that scored Dow.

For the game, Powell led everyone with three hits. Bosket, Maci Hutto and Robinson had two hits apiece. Robinson drove in four while Moore knocked in two batters. Bosket, Robinson and Strauss each crossed home twice.

In the circle, Cockrell threw a complete game. She struck out six batters and gave up one earned run on four hits.

USC Aiken dominated the second game, jumping on top 1-0 in the first when Strauss doubled home Powell. Dow started things off in the second inning with a solo blast. Strauss singled home Powell before Kathleen St. Peter singled home Strauss. Robinson completed the scoring in the stanza with a three-run blast.

In the fourth, Down rocketed a shot to straight-away center field. Bosket completed the scoring with a two-run shot in the fourth, plating Moore for a 10-0 lead.

Tracy Truesdale tossed a complete game, striking out four to pick up the victory. She gave up just two hits in the contest.

At the plate, Down led everyone with three hits. Emily Ayers and Strauss had two hits apiece. Robinson posted three RBI while Bosket, Dow and Strauss each had two RBI.  

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they host Newberry in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
