AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept Benedict College by scores of 2-0 and 12-0 Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 12-4 on the year.
Caroline Cockrell pitched the first game, striking out five and only walking two, while Tracy Truesdale threw the second game, allowing no walks and striking out two.
In game one, Katie Painter and Brooke Moore were the only two that scored for the Pacers to secure the win.
Emily Ayers got things started with Moore on third and Smith on second in the first inning. Ayers hit a fair ball to secure first base thus advancing Moore and Smith. Moore managed to run it home. Smith advanced to second but was thrown out at third base.
In the third, Moore batted in Painter on a ground out to score what ended up being the final run put up on the board for the game.
At the plate, Painter and Moore each had two hits while Moore picked up an RBI. Katelyn Powell, Shircoria Bosket, Courtney Strauss and Ayers had one hit apiece.
In game two, the Pacers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off a home run smashed to left field by Jessica Smith after Powell stole second. They tacked on another run in the third when Strauss flied out for a sacrifice, bringing home Bosket to make it 3-0.
USC Aiken scored the bulk of their runs in the bottom of the very next inning, picking up six more off of multiple home runs. With Moore, Powell and Painter filling the bags, Smith shot a single out to center that turned into an error, allowing her to slide over to second and everyone else to cross home. Bosket belted a homer the next at bat to bring Smith in, and then Strauss sent one over the wall to make it 9-0 going into the fourth.
The Pacers grabbed two more runs an inning later. After Smith drew a walk, Brianna Dow came in to pinch run for her. Bosket then came in clutch with a single down the left field line that brought Moore across home plate. A batter later, Dow came home on an error by right field to make the final score 12-0.
For the game, both Powell and Bosket went three-for-three, with Bosket picking up three RBI. Smith picked up two hits and three RBI while Painter, Moore, Strauss and Holly Daum had one hit apiece.
The Pacers return to action Saturday at Erskine College at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at PacerSports.com.
