Pacers Drop Road Finale At UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team dropped an 11-10 contest at UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game set.

The Pacers are now 8-4 on the year and 2-4 in league play.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on the board with a run in the top of the third. Luke Leisenring blasted a double to center field, plating Jackson Hannon, who reached earlier in the frame on a single.

Tied at 1-1 in the fourth, USC Aiken loaded the bags. Hannon registered a walk after a full count, allowing Jeff Cyr to trot home for a 2-1 advantage.

Trailing 6-2 in the fifth, Scott Huntley's base knock through the right side of the infield scored Leisenring, who reached on a leadoff double down the right field line.

Down 7-3 in the sixth, the Pacers scored four runs to knot things up. Marcus Mastellone singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hannon's base hit loaded the bases as Sean McQuillan went to second after getting on base via a walk. Eric McGirt ripped a double to the gap in right center field, clearing the bags and pulling the visitors within one at 7-6. Moments later, McGirt knotted the game when he scored on a passed ball.

Thomas' team scored three runs in the eighth to take a 10-7 lead. Hannon got things going with a double to left field. With one down, Leisenring was put on first via an intentional walk. After a fly ball out, Huntley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacob Boyd ripped a 1-0 single up the middle, scoring Hannon and Leisenring. Cyr increased the advantage to three when he blasted a double to the gap in left center field, allowing Huntley to cross home.

Despite a hard-fought effort by the Pacers, UNCP managed to gain four more runs across the ninth and 10th innings to take the game 11-10.

Daniel Lee got the starting nod on the mound and went three innings. He had one strikeout. Daniel Wiggins came in and threw 5.1 innings while striking out two. Jacob Rye tossed the last 1.1 innings and managed to pick up one strikeout.

At the plate, Hannon and Cyr both had three hits while McQuillan and Leisenring picked up two each. Boyd, Huntley, Mastellone and McGirt picked up one hit apiece. McGirt also had three RBI while Boyd managed to grab two of his own.

For the game, USC Aiken had 10 runs on 14 hits.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they play at Georgia Southwestern. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
