AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 5 University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team knocked off No. 6 Wingate by a 4-2 score Monday morning, earning a spot in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
The Pacers are now 18-3 on the season while the Bulldogs conclude the year at 20-5.
Head coach
Steve Dahm's team won the doubles point Sunday morning by clinching victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
Vicente Andrades and
Tales Silva posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2. After
Salvador Bandeira and
Antonio Sabugueiro fell 6-3, third-seeded
Francesco Satta and
Alex Sklizovic secured the point by winning 7-5.
The Bulldogs clamed a 2-1 lead after winning at No. 6 and No. 1 singles. However, Bandeira tied it with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2.
Andrades went toe-to-toe with his opponent at No. 4 before besting him 6-4, 6-4. Holding a 3-2 lead, Sabugueiro once again clinched the match for the home squad. Sabugueiro registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory to send USC Aiken to the round of 16.
