How Sweet It Is! Pacers Advance To Sweet 16

AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 5 University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team knocked off No. 6 Wingate by a 4-2 score Monday morning, earning a spot in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.

The Pacers are now 18-3 on the season while the Bulldogs conclude the year at 20-5.

Head coach Steve Dahm's team won the doubles point Sunday morning by clinching victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Vicente Andrades and Tales Silva posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2. After Salvador Bandeira and Antonio Sabugueiro fell 6-3, third-seeded Francesco Satta and Alex Sklizovic secured the point by winning 7-5.

The Bulldogs clamed a 2-1 lead after winning at No. 6 and No. 1 singles. However, Bandeira tied it with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Andrades went toe-to-toe with his opponent at No. 4 before besting him 6-4, 6-4. Holding a 3-2 lead, Sabugueiro once again clinched the match for the home squad. Sabugueiro registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory to send USC Aiken to the round of 16.

More information on USC Aiken's next opponent will be posted in the near future. The Pacers head to Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 21-24 for the National Championship.
