ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 5 University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over No. 29 Drury Tuesday afternoon in the Sweet 16.
The Pacers are now 19-3 on the season while the Panthers end their season at 17-6.
Head coach
Steve Dahm's team took a 1-0 lead by claiming two of the doubles matches. Top-seeded
Salvador Bandeira and
Antonio Sabugueiro won a hard-fought 7-5 contest. Second-seeded
Vicente Andrades and
Tales Silva fell by the closest of margins, 7-6 (7-5). However,
Francesco Satta and
Alex Sklizovic notched a 7-6 (7-2) victory for a 1-0 advantage.
Alvaro Garcia Gil cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 slot for a 2-0 edge. After Drury got on the board with a three-set win at No. 6, Andrades registered a resounding 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 position.
Salvador Bandeira picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 73 Augustin Diot at No. 2 singles, clinching the match.
Silva and Sabugueiro did not complete their respective matches after USC Aiken clinched the victory.
