Pacers Split With Jaguars

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader with Augusta, winning 5-4 before falling 4-3.

The Pacers are now 21-23 on the season.

In game one, USC Aiken jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Katie Painter singled up the middle and hustled to second on a bunt single from Katelyn Powell. A base hit from Hannah Price allowed Painter to cross home. Courtney Strauss rocketed a deep fly ball, plating Powell. Caroline Cockrell singled home Price for a 3-0 advantage.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team pushed the score to 4-1 with a run in the second. Holly Daum singled to lead things off. After moving to second on a groundout, Painter's base knock scored Daum for the three-run margin.

The Jaguars knotted the score with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After neither team scored in the seventh, Snyder's squad registered what turned out to be the game-winning run in the seventh.

After Powell reached on an error, she raced home when Price launched an opposite field double to right center field for a 5-4 score.

Augusta threatened in the bottom of the frame, but Powell threw out a Jaguar trying to steal second for the second out of the inning. A fly ball ended the game.

For the contest, Cockrell went the distance in the circle. She struck out four.

At the plate, Cockrell led the way with three hits and one RBI. Daum, Painter and Price had two hits apiece. Price drove in two while Powell scored twice.

In game two, USC Aiken trailed 2-0 in the second inning before rallying for three runs in the third. With one down, Daum doubled to left field and scored on a single by Painter. Price stepped up to the plate and crushed her league-leading 13th round-tripper of the season, giving the visitors. 3-2 edge.

Snyder's team left two stranded in the sixth and had a chance to break open the game in the seventh. Daum led off the final inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was erased at third on a fielder's choice. Powell and Sydney Burk each singled, loading the bases as Price was on third. However, a groundout ended the inning.

The Jaguars managed to score two runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

For the game, Price led the way with two hits and two RBI. Daum, Painter and Powell each had two hits in the contest while Burk, Maci Hutto and Sarah Sams had one apiece.

Price went the distance in the circle. She struck out four batters and gave up just two earned runs on six hits.

The Pacers return to action Friday, Apr. 19, when they play at North Georgia in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
