SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept a doubleheader at Converse, winning by scores of 4-2 and 3-2.
The Pacers are now 17-19 on the season.
In game one,
Hanna Hyder singled through the right side of the infield with two away. After a walk to
Janee McCarthy pushed her to second base,
Maci Hutto ripped a single to left, plating Hyder.
Holly Daum followed her up with a single to center field that scored McCarthy for a 2-0 edge.
A Hyder sacrifice fly in the third allowed
Hannah Price to score for a 3-0 margin. Price had singled to lead off the stanza.
Leading 3-1 in the sixth, Daum singled and moved to second on a groundout. She raced home when Price smacked a base hit to center field.
Converse would plate a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Daum picked up a base hit and fired it to
Kathleen St. Peter, who tagged out the runner trying to go to third base for the final out of the game.
Price completed the game in the circle for the win. She went the distance, striking out two while giving up two runs on six hits.
For the game, Daum, Hyder and Price accounted for two hits apiece.
In game two, USC Aiken trailed 1-0 going into the top of the fourth. Price led off the inning with an infield single. She moved to third after a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Sydney Burk lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Price to cross home and knot the score at 1-1.
Daum led off the sixth with a base hit to the gap in left center field.
Katie Painter's bunt allowed Daum to hustle to second. Price ripped a single up the middle, plating Daum. An error on the play allowed Painter to score for a 3-1 edge.
Converse scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but
Caroline Cockrell forced back-to-back groundouts to end the game.
For the contest, Price and Daum had two hits apiece. Burk and Price had one RBI each.
Cockrell threw a complete game, striking out two. She gave up two runs on eight hits.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they host UNC Pembroke starting at 1 p.m.
