AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of games to UNC Pembroke by scores of 7-2 and 11-6.
The Pacers are now 17-21 on the season while the Braves improve to 13-19.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, head coach
Jerry Snyder's team cut the deficit to one.
Holly Daum singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Courtney Strauss. A groundout from
Hannah Price pushed her to third. After an errant throw by the catcher trying to force her back to the bag, Daum raced home to make it 2-1.
USC Aiken threatened in the next two innings but could push across a run.
Down 5-1 in the fifth, Snyder's group put another run on the scoreboard.
Sarah Sams laced a triple down the right field line before scoring on a single from
Maci Hutto. Three batters later, Strauss singled to push Daum to second. However, a groundout that was extremely close ended the stanza.
The visitors tacked on two more runs in the sixth for the final 7-2 score.
For the game, Daum led the way with two hits. Strauss,
Katelyn Powell,
Katie Painter, Sams and Hutto all had hits.
In game two, USC Aiken trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the second, but Strauss got the home team on the board with a towering solo blast over the center field wall to lead of the frame.
Down 10-1 in the fourth, Price smacked a double to the fence down the left field line. After swiping third, she raced home on a single from
Sydney Burk to make it 10-2.
Trailing 11-2 in the fifth, USC Aiken plated three runs. Daum doubled in Strauss before Powell doubled in Robinson and Daum to make it 11-5. A sacrifice fly from Painter that scored Powell in the seventh accounted for the final run of the game.
For the contest, Powell and Price had two hits apiece. Powell drove in two runs while Strauss crossed home plate twice.
