Pacers Drop Non-Conference Contest

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 6-4 decision to Augusta in a non-conference contest at SRP Park.
The Pacers are now 17-13 on the season.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With two down, Blake Bottomley was hit by a pitch and quickly moved to second on a bunt single from Philip Watcher. Chandler Rogers plated Bottomley with a base hit to left field.
The Jaguars scored five runs in the bottom of the second, but USC Aiken cut into the deficit in the fourth. Alex Mills led off the stanza with a monster shot over the left field wall to make it 5-2.
In the fifth, Trey Polewski singled up the middle and trotted to second on a walk to Conner Durden. Polewski moved to third on a fly ball from Mills. After Durden stole second, Blake Jenkins ripped a single to center field, plating both to make it 5-4.
AU increased the margin to 6-4 on a homer in the fifth.
The teams were scoreless the rest of the way, but USC Aiken continued to battle. Durden rocketed a single to right field with one down in the ninth. A balk allowed pinch runner Jackson Hannon to go to second, but Thomas' team was unable to push across another run.
For the game, Mills had a pair of hits while Jenkins drove in a pair.
Daniel Wiggins got the starting nod on the mound. William Ard, Austin Sandifer and Cameron Nolet all pitched. The four combined for 11 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they host UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
