AIKEN, S.C. –
Jackson Hannon belted a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to send the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team to a 13-12 win over UNC Pembroke Friday evening.
The Pacers are now 18-13 overall and 10-6 in league play. The Braves fall to 15-16 overall and 5-11 in PBC action.
Trailing 2-0 in the third,
Conner Durden drew a two-out walk. He hustled to third on a single by
Alex Mills. Mills promptly swiped second base and Durden scored on the play. After
Luke Leisenring was hit by a pitch, he and Mills each moved up a base on a wild pitch.
Trey Polewski belted a single to left, plating Mills to knot the contest at 2-2.
USC Aiken erupted for seven runs in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed
Cary Holloway to score.
Joey Smithers ripped a single to center, scoring
Sean McQuillan and
Blake Bottomley. Later in the frame, Durden's double plated Smithers and
Chandler Rogers. Mills doubled in a run while Mills scored on Leisenring's groundout for the four-run advantage.
The Braves battled back, tying the game at 9-9 after plating two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
In the seventh, Polewski walked and went to second on a wild pitch.
Blake Bottomley doubled, pushing Polewski to third before McQuillan's drag bunt down the first base line allowed Polewski to score for a 10-9 margin. Moments later, Smithers reached on an error, which allowed McQuillan to score for a two-run advantage.
Leisenring led off the eighth with a walk and was lifted for Hannon as a pinch runner. Polewski bunted Hannon to second and with two down, Bottomley skied a high pop-up that landed just out of the reach of two Braves for a double, scoring Hannon for a 12-9 lead.
UNC Pembroke rattled off three runs in the ninth to tie it at 12-12.
With one down in the bottom of the ninth, Rogers singled and swiped second. After an intentional walk to Mills, Hannon belted the game-winning hit to center field as Rogers raced around to score.
At the plate, Bottomley led the way with three hits, including two doubles. Durden drove in a pair of runs on two hits. McQuillan, Mills and Rogers had two hits apiece while Smithers posted two RBI.
Austin Sandifer came in with one out in the ninth to register the final two outs while earning the victory.
Mitch Spence got the start and worked five frames.
