USC Aiken Defeats Georgia Southwestern

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team won an 8-3 game against Georgia Southwestern Sunday afternoon.

USC Aiken is now 16-9 on the season and 8-4 in league play. The Hurricanes sit at 10-16 overall and 5-10 in the PBC.

Garvin Alston Jr. got the starting nod on the mound, throwing five innings. He struck out six while allowing three hits and walking three.

The Pacers took off running, grabbing their first run in the bottom of the first inning. With Trey Polewski grabbing first on a walk to lead things off and Chandler Rogers pushing him over to second on a single to right, the bases were filled when Conner Durden took first on a hit-by-pitch.  Alex Mills stepped up to the plate and floated a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring Polewski across home plate and make it 1-0 for the Pacers.

USC Aiken added another run two innings later in the bottom of the third. After Rogers was hit by a pitch and Luke Leisenring drew a walk, both batters moved forward a base on a wild pitch. Philip Watcher then followed up with a single to center that brought Rogers home to make it 2-0 for USC Aiken. The Hurricanes grabbed their own run in the top of the next inning.

Without wasting any time, the Pacers got back to it in the bottom of the fourth and added three more runs. Sean McQuillan started things off with a single and promptly moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. Rogers was then hit by a pitch and advanced to second on another wild pitch. Leisenring followed up with a double that brought both home and was then pushed all the way to third on a single by Durden. He then crossed home plate when Mills forced a fielder's choice to bring it to 5-1 for the Pacers.

In the bottom of the fifth, USC Aiken added another quick run to the board. With one out, Jackson Hannon had a home run near-miss to left field that turned into a triple and was brought home on a ground out to make it 6-2 for USC Aiken.

While Georgia Southwestern did manage to pick up two more runs, the Pacers sealed the deal in the bottom of the eighth by adding two more of their own. After Leisenring led off with a walk and then moved to second on a ground out, he capitalized on an error to come across home plate while saw Mills reached first. Mills then advanced to third on a ground out and grabbed home on a wild pitch to finish the game off at 8-3 in the Pacers' favor.

For the game, Durden and Watcher grabbed two hits apiece while Rogers, Leisenring, Hannon and McQuillan all picked up one hit each.

On the mound, Austin Sandifer, Lindsey Robinson Jr., Daniel Wiggins and Jon Yarbrough all threw an inning apiece, with Robinson Jr. striking out two. Wiggins and Yarbrough each picking up a strikeout as well.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday, March 20 when they travel to Greenville and take on the North Greenville Crusaders at 4 p.m.
