Pacers Take Second Game Against Hurricanes

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team won an 8-1 game against Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon.

USC Aiken is now 15-9 on the season and 7-4 in league play. The Hurricanes sit at 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the PBC.

Zach Rafuse got the starting nod on the mound, throwing five innings. He struck out seven while allowing only two hits and walking three.

The Pacers decisively took the game from the start, picking up three runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Chandler Rogers sent a single out to center field and then promptly stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Luke Leisenring then stepped up to the plate and brought Rogers home on a sacrifice fly out to left field. Not ones to be left out, Conner Durden followed up with a double to center and was immediately pushed across home plate by a triple from Alex Mills. He then came across home on a single by Philip Watcher to make it 3-0 for USC Aiken.

Just an inning later, USC Aiken added another run to the board. After Jackson Hannon, Trey Polewski and Rogers filled the bases on walks, Durden slapped a single to second base that pushed Hannon home to make it 4-0 for the Pacers.

For a bit more insurance, USC Aiken added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as well. With a man down, Polewski took first on a walk, stole second and grabbed third on a wild pitch. Then with men on the corners after Rogers was hit by a pitch, Leisenring floated a single to right field bringing Polewski home. A batter later, Mills weaved a double down the left line to bring Rogers across and make it 6-0 in the Pacers' favor.

To finish their scoring off for the afternoon, USC Aiken put up two more runs the very next inning. With one out on the board, Hannon slapped a single to left field and was quickly brought home on a first-pitch home run by Sean McQuillan to make it 8-0 for USC Aiken. Though the Hurricanes managed to pick up a run in the  top of the seventh, nothing would stop the Pacers from taking the ball game.

For the game, Rogers, Durden and Mills grabbed two hits apiece while Leisenring, Watcher, Hannon and McQuillan picked up one hit each.

On the mound, Connor Christensen, Zach Lang, Cameron Nolet and Jacob Rye all threw an inning apiece, with Nolet and Rye each picking up a strikeout.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow, March 17 as they finish off the series against the Hurricanes at 1 p.m.
