USC Aiken Drops Contest To Georgia Southwestern

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team narrowly fell in a 4-3 game to Georgia Southwestern Friday evening.

USC Aiken is now 14-9 on the season and 6-4 in league play. The Hurricanes sit at 10-14 overall and 5-8 in the PBC.

Mitch Spence got the starting nod on the mound, throwing 7.1 innings. He struck out eight while throwing 119 pitches and intentionally walking one.

The game was a pitcher's duel from the start, with each team only collecting one run apiece until the eighth inning. Georgia Southwestern picked theirs up in the top of the fourth and Luke Leisenring slammed a no-question home run over the wall in the bottom of the sixth for the Pacers.

After dropping down to 4-1 in the top of the eighth, USC Aiken attempted to even things up in the bottom of the inning. With one man down, Trey Polewski played the discerning batter and drew a walk on a full count. He was quickly rewarded as Leisenring stepped up to the plate and rocketed another homer over the wall to make it 4-3 against the Pacers. Despite a valiant attempt by the home team to even things up in the bottom of the ninth, the game went to the Hurricanes.

For the game, Leisenring and Jackson Hannon grabbed two hits apiece while Polewski, Blake Jenkins and Philip Watcher picked up one hit each.

On the mound, Henry Cartrett threw the last 1.2 innings and struck out four while not giving up a single hit or walk.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow, March 16 as they continue the series against the Hurricanes at 2 p.m.
