USC Aiken Defeats North Georgia, 6-1

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team won a 6-1 game to North Georgia Sunday afternoon.

USC Aiken is now 14-7 on the season and 6-3 in league play. The Nighthawks sit at 15-5 overall and 6-3 in the PBC.

Garvin Alston Jr. got the starting nod on the mound, throwing 7.1 innings. He struck out nine while only allowing three hits in a memorable performance.

The Pacers took ahold of the game as soon as possible, putting up four runs in the top of the first. With a man down, Trey Polewski singled to gain first base and then hurried over to second on a wild pitch. Conner Durden decided to bring Polewski on around when he slammed a homer to right center. A batter later, Blake Jenkins shot a single over to left center and was pushed over to second when Philip Watcher smacked a single of his own. Chandler Rogers followed them up with a double that brought both across home plate to make it 4-0 in the Pacers' favor.

The Nighthawks attempted to come back in the bottom of the eighth, but they only managed to gain one run making it 4-1 for the Pacers.

Just for insurance, USC Aiken grabbed two more runs in the top of the ninth. Durden started things off, grabbing first after being hit by a pitch. After Durden was pushed over to second off a sacrifice bunt by Alex Mills, Jenkins shot a single through the left side to move him over to third. Watcher then stepped up and sent a single right up the middle that brought Durden home and was followed up by a single from Rogers that loaded the bases. Jenkins then came across home plate on a sacrifice fly from Blake Bottomley to make it a 6-1 game for the Pacers.

For the game, Watcher stepped up with three hits while Durden, Jenkins, Polewski and Rogers grabbed two hits apiece. Bottomley and Mills picked up one hit each.

On the mound, Hunter Shuff threw the last 1.2 innings and struck out two. Alston Jr. picked up the much-deserved win.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday, March 13 as they play host to the Erskine Flying Fleet at 6 p.m.
