AIKEN, S.C. –
Hannah Price shattered a pair of school records as the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team registered a pair of wins over Benedict by scores of 16-3 and 3-0.
The Pacers are now 3-1 on the season.
Price smashed a school-record three round-trippers and notched the school record for total bases with 12 in the opening win. She accounted for six RBI in the contest and scored three times.
Katelyn Powell tallied three hits while
Katie Painter,
Sarah Sams and
Courtney Strauss had two hits apiece in the opener. Strauss scored three times while Briana Dow, Powell and Sams all crossed home twice.
Leah Boghosian,
Maci Hutto,
Katie Painter and
Kathleen St. Peter each scored once.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Strauss singled to get things going. Two batters later, Price registered a homer. Powell doubled home Hutto, who walked and swiped second. Down reached on an error, allowing Powell to score. A sacrifice fly from Sams made it 5-2.
Strauss led off the second frame with a solo blast. Not to be outdone, Price homered two batters later for a 7-2 edge.
In the third, Painter singled home Boghosian, who came in for a pinch runner after St. Peter walked. Strauss reached base, allowing Sams to race home.
Holding a 9-2 lead, Sams doubled home Powell and Dow in the fourth. Painter doubled home St. Peter and Sams for a 13-2 lead. With two Pacers on base, Price smacked her third homer of the game.
In game two, Strauss led things off with a single before hustling to third on Boghosian's base hit. Price singled home Strauss for a 1-0 lead.
Caroline Cockrell's base hit pushed the score to 2-0.
It was more than enough for Cockrell, who struck out 14 batters in the complete-game three-hit win. However, USC Aiken added an insurance run in the sixth when Hutto's groundout allowed Powell to score. Powell had reached base on a lead-off triple.
The Pacers return to action Friday when they travel to Coker for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
