ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision at Flagler Friday evening.
The Pacers are now 24-3 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team lost the first two sets by two points in each frame (29-27 and 26-24), but bounced back to take the third stanza 25-12. USC Aiken came up short in the fourth set 25-20.
The Pacers were led by
Christine Carroll's match-high 18 kills while she hit .239. Carroll added six blocks as well.
Anita Cookey-Gam tallied 12 kills while
Abbey Schad chipped in seven.
Alli Bell dished out 24 assists while
Mallory Barash accounted for 18 kills.
In addition to Carroll's six total blocks,
Ashlyn Hill added two. Cookey-Gam and Barash also had two total blocks apiece.
Defensively,
Rebecca Martinez totaled 19 digs while
Emily Duggan chipped in 12. Schad had nine digs while
Kelsey Spurlin and
Kari Mercer tallied eight and seven, respectively.
USC Aiken led the first frame 25-24 after an ace from Bell. However, Flagler tallied the next two points. The Pacers tie the Saints at 26-26 and 27-27 before the home team reeled off the final two points for the win.
Trailing 24-22 in the second stanza, Schad and Cookey-Gam posted back-to-back kills. However, Flagler managed to score the next two for the victory.
Cox's team regrouped and raced past the Saints in the third frame. Down 4-1, Carrolll slammed home a kill. Trailing 4-2 in the set, a miscue by the home team made it 4-3. Duggan dropped back and served up an ace to knot the contest. USC Aiken embarked on a 12-1 spurt for a commanding lead. Moments later, Schad's kill ended the set at 25-12.
Down 15-10 in the fourth set, the Pacers pulled within one at 17-16 when Barash connected with Schad, but the visitors were unable to tie the contest. Flagler pulled away late for the five-point victory.
