USC Aiken Takes Down Lander

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-2 win over Lander Tuesday evening.

The Pacers are 24-2 on the year, including 8-1 in league play. The Bearcats stand at 18-7 overall and 7-2 against conference foes.

Christine Carroll led the way with a career-high 26 kills while hitting .451 in the win. Alie Smith totaled another double-double with 19 kills to go along with 15 digs. Abbey Schad notched 11 kills, seven digs and four solo blocks. Anita Cookey-Gam and Avery Macklin totaled nine and eight kills, respectively.

Alli Bell garnered a match-best 59 assists to go along with nine digs.

Defensively, Rebecca Martinez notched a match-high 37 digs to go along with five assists. Kari Mercer totaled 19 digs while Emily Duggan accounted for 18 digs and three aces.

Head coach Glenn Cox's team jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a block by Schad in the opening frame. The squad led 21-18 before Schad and Carroll found the court with back-to-back kills. Up 24-20, Cookey-Gam ended the set with a thunderous kill.

After dropping the second set, USC Aiken trailed 11-7 in the third frame. However, Carroll's kill sparked a 4-0 run to notch the set. Dugan served up an ace while Carroll ended the run with a kill. Leading 22-20, Schad hammered home a kill. After a miscue by the visitors, Bell found Smith for the set-winner.

The Pacers had match point in the fourth set, but the Bearcats managed to pull out a 26-24 win, forcing a fifth frame.

Down 4-2 in the fifth stanza, Cookey-Gam and Carroll combined for a block. Bell and Carroll teamed up for a block, tying the score at 4-4. Carroll's kill gave USC Aiken a 5-4 edge. Down 9-8, Cookey-Gam tied the set with a kill off a pass from Bell. Schad's ace pushed the score to 10-9.

Tied at 11-11, an error by Lander sparked a 3-0 run. Duggan served up an ace before Smith slammed home a kill. Leading 14-12, Bell found Smith for the match-winner.
