USC Aiken Sweeps UNC Pembroke

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 23-2 on the year, including 7-1 in league play. The Braves are now 13-17 overall and 1-7 against league foes.

USC Aiken was led by Christine Carroll and Alie Smith, who each had 16 kills. Smith accounted for a double-double with 16 digs. Alli Bell garnered a double-double with 34 assists and 12 digs.

Avery Macklin notched nine kills while Abbey Schad and Anita Cookey-Gam had six and three, respectively.

Defensively, Rebecca Martinez led everyone with 21 digs. Emily Duggan contributed nine digs and an ace.

In the first set, head coach Glenn Cox's team jumped out to a 10-4 advantage after leading 5-4. Carroll got things started with a kill. UNC Pembroke had three errors and Smith had a kill en route to the six-point edge. Leading 11-9, the Pacers embarked on a 4-0 spurt for a six-point lead. The home squad pushed the margin to 10 after a miscue by the Braves. USC Aiken cruised to the 25-14 first set win.

With Martinez serving, the Pacers jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the second stanza. During the huge run to start the frame, Smith had five kills. USC Aiken made it a 10-point margin on a kill from Carroll and pushed the advantage to 14 on an error by the visitors. Smith and Macklin posted back-to-back kills for the 25-11 victory.

In the third set, the Pacers led 6-5 before scoring 12 of the next 13 points. USC Aiken led 20-10 prior to Bell finding Carroll for the kill. The teams traded points to make it 22-11. Carroll notched a kill to make it 23-11. Kari Mercer found Smith for the kill before Bell ended the match with a thunderous kill.

Prior to the match, seniors Alli Bell, Christine Carroll, Avery Macklin, Rebecca Martinez and Kelsey Spurlin were honored as part of the Senior Day festivities.
